Overview

The UCLA Undergraduate Law Journal is seeking contributors for its twenty-third volume, to be published in Spring 2024. We are looking for driven, passionate undergraduate students from the United States and abroad to apply to be writers and editors for the Journal.

As an annual publication of student-composed articles on law-related topics, the Journal is one of the few undergraduate legal publications in the United States. In the past, students have written articles covering a wide range of subjects, including legal philosophy, legal history, public policy, and the criminal justice system. The Journal is composed solely of undergraduate and recently graduated students' entries, making it one of the few undergraduate law reviews in the country modeled after the law reviews of top law schools. We have published 22 volumes since 2002.

The Journal is also committed to empowering and equipping students who may be underrepresented in the legal field with the necessary skills to thrive not only as writers and editors in our organization but also as agents of change in society. We believe that the composition of our staff should not reflect the lack of diversity in the broader legal field.

Selected writers and editors of Volume 23 of the Journal will be paired with each other at the end of Fall Quarter. Writers will complete a rough draft of their proposed article during Winter Break. Then, during Winter Quarter (January to late March), writers and editors will work collaboratively to compose a 15-25 page article for publication by spring.

Deadlines and Important Dates

Applications for both writer and editor positions are due on Friday, November 3, 2023, 11:59 PM (PST) (Week 5). The Executive Board will consider all applications and render decisions by Week 7 (November 12–18, 2023). For accepted contributors, our first meeting will be on Monday, November 20, 2023, time and place TBA (Week 8), where new contributors will get to meet each other and editors will hear about the writers’ articles. There will be a second Fall Quarter meeting on Monday, December 4, 2023, Time and Place TBA (Week 10). To summarize:

• Applications Due: Friday, November 3, 2023, 11:59 PM (PST) (Week 5)

• Application Decisions Released: November 12–18, 2023 (Week 7)

• First Meeting for Accepted Applicants: Monday, November 20, 2023

• Second Meeting for Accepted Applicants: Monday, December 4, 2023
